Second Post: Feminism

Myths associated with feminism include that women wanting to be treated better than men or about how feminist women hate men . There is also the stereotypes that all feminists are lesbians that want men to be less than women or that feminist women burn their bras. In the video The F Word, a girl mentioned how feminism it is about being equal as well as being about the self. I think that is more what feminism truly is, not just about women being better and stronger than men. My personal definition of what feminism truly is women having equality with men. This can be in any way, such as socially, politically, and economically. I had not thought of myself as a feminist before, but after seeing this video, I do believe that I am a feminist. I want women to be able to have the same rights as men, and portray that in how I live my life as a woman, such as voting and working for a education and job like men. I believe both men and women can be feminists.
I think that the term feminism may be on a decline in today's society, as many people that I know do not view feminism as something that is positive. I do not believe that feminist ideas are on a decline in today's society, though the word may be. Like mentioned in The F Word, many girls in the current day do believe in core feminist ideas such as equality with men, but would not know to label that as feminism. I believe equality is something many girls strive for, whether it be for themselves or others.

  1. What I liked in the video was one woman's definition of Feminism. She believed all woman and men should be treated equally and given the same opportunity, but this does not mean to omit any responsibilities you may have. Men and woman do have their own responsibilities that they create for themselves. For example, having a family is responsibility, and someone who doesn't have a family has the ability to do more with a career than a mother or father would.

  2. I think my favorite definition was the one the stated feminism was "the radical idea that women are human beings," because I notice some rude treatment where I work because people constantly going through the MUB. I also believe that feminism is somewhat on the decline for reasons like what I notice in the MUB and all kinds of inappropriate comments. I don't say anything when I hear it but maybe I should. I don't want to be an aggravate so I keep to myself and I feel a lot of people do that.

  3. I really like that definition Sam, I think that there are responsibilities both men and women need to carry. You are right about that too, if a woman puts herself into the position of housewife as a choice, then that is her responsibility to uphold that, as well as same if in the opposite situation.
Lynette that is very true, and I think we all hear sexist things during each day. I don't speak out as well, but maybe if we all started speaking out against these inappropriate comments change may begin to happen.

  4. Sam and Ruth i'm going to have to agree with you guys on that definition, I love how it states that men and women should be viewed as equal but everyone still has their own responsibilities and what not. A person is a person in my eyes and I think all men and women should be offered equal opportunities if they are deserved.

Ruth I also liked how you pointed out that the actual word Feminism may not carry the proper definition now a days but people are striving towards equality without even necessarily knowing that they themselves may be a feminist.

  5. I agree, great definition. I liked how you pointed out that both males and females can be feminists. I think that if any change is going to be made for gender equality, it will undoubtedly take the efforts of both sides, male and female.

I also thought your ideas on why feminism is in decline were interesting. I wrote in my blog that I believe it has and will continue to make further strives. However, I think you make a great point and I agree with you also. I think that a variety of misinterpretations that the feminist movement is so burdened by is having negative impact on gender equality in its ability to make any further strives.

  6. I really liked how you contributed that feminism is about equality, but it is also about the importance of the self. I agree with this definition, but also thought you made a great point in saying that although feminism may be on a decline today, however, feminist ideas are still fighting currently.

I think that it is really important that feminists today remember the importance of the self and how the voice of one has made a difference in the past, and can, and will again. I think that the harsh stereotypes have driven people away from supporting feminism and considering oneself a feminist also can use as a motivator that the power of the self can still overcome these false notions.

  7. I agree with all three of you! It's interesting to see how the feminist ideas are pushing through, even though the title faces such controversy.

  8. I also like what was said in the F word about how a lot of girls today believe in core feminists ideas but would not label it as feminism. I believe its a step in the right direction where equal rights for women is apart of our culture and society so we don't have to give it labels.

  9. I invite a woman who works at the Feminist health Center into my face-to-face classes to talk about her work. Very soon, they are changing the name of the center because they feel that the feminist part of the title is keeping people away from using the services of the clinic. I think this little example helps to illuminate the thing you are talking about. While I and this woman like the name Feminist health Center, the reality is that if they don't change the name, it will make it harder to stay open. After all these years, the word feminist continues to be something that causes such great controversy.

  10. Wow, it's interesting and quite sad that just a name can make a really positive place lose business. I wonder if in the future after years of the feminist ideas infiltrating everyone we'll be able to accept Feminism and being called Feminist as a positive thing.
