Post Eleven: Transgender

One of the ladies in Beautiful Daughters mentioned how everything is not about sex, it is about love and finding a partner in life. This entire movie was incredible at capturing the hardships that face many trans woman in today's world; it really was able to push forward the feelings of these woman and the oppression put on them by most of society. I did not learn much from both the movie and article, as I have a few friends that are transgender and took a class at UCSC on human sexuality last year. The movie did hit my emotions pretty hard; it was very upsetting to hear how one of the ladies just assumes that she will be pushed off if she tells a male prospect about her past. I think that this correlates with the rest of the topics we have studied so far, and how much people have privilege and just don't see and understand how much inequality there is in society.
The article by Serano did bring up a point that I had not thought of before, that is " By embracing our own femaleness and femininity, we, in a sense, cast a shadow of doubt over the supposed supremacy of maleness and masculinity.". I had never thought of the hate shown against transgender people being because of males own lack of self confidence.  People need to work to fight against transphobia by speaking out when put downs are said and through education. I think that if more people heard these women speak, or read these articles, understanding and then acceptance would take place.

  1. I also had never thought of the hate shown against tansgender people until reading this article and watching the film. I agree that more people who feel differently about transgenders and may feel that transphobia should watch this film or read this article and maybe after seeing the pain these women experience, they'll reconsider their views.

  2. Remember, privilege is invisible to those who have it. This includes cisgender privilege. This is why trans activists and allies are engaged in a struggle to promote understanding of trans oppression and the need to create immediate social change.

  3. The more we learn about different types of oppression the more privilege becomes visible to us. We need more allies, for all these issues. I do think some things are getting better, but it just takes so much time, time during which people are getting hurt :/
