Quick Post: Article

I picked an article about religious oppression that was posted a few weeks ago online Yahoo news. It makes me so sad to see how people are treated horribly because of their religion in our "free" America. The report was about a Muslim woman who got harassed and attacked with pepper spray when driving to her mosque. They mention at the end of the news story that video cameras had been installed outside of the mosque because of previous vandalism on cars. This kind of hatred is exactly what we need to stop from happening through education and acceptance. If she were Christian, she would have the privilege and probably never have to face that type of violence and hatred because of her faith.

Muslim woman reports attack outside Ohio mosque

COLUMBUS, Ohio – A 20-year-old immigrant from Somalia said someone assaulted her with pepper spray outside an Ohio mosque and told her to leave the country, spurring investigations by police and likely the FBI.
Saida Said said she was in her car running errands when a man in a car followed her to the mosque's parking lot on the west side of Columbus on Monday afternoon.
Said told reporters the man harassed her, swore at her, said she should leave the country and threatened to kill her. He then attacked her with pepper spray, she said.
Mosque officials called police, who took a report and turned it over to the prosecutor's office.
The FBI said Tuesday it will likely open a civil rights investigation, the results of which would be turned over to federal prosecutors for any possible charges.
A mosque security camera recorded the encounter. The video, which was shown to reporters, shows the woman pulling into the parking lot, another vehicle pulling in and blocking hers, and then a man getting out and angrily talking to her. The alleged pepper-spraying was not visible, because the woman's car blocked the camera's view.
Abdiaziz Abdi, a spokesman for the mosque, said the camera was installed about a year ago because several cars had been vandalized.

  1. This is heart-breaking, and sadly so common, especially since 9/11. Islamophobia is a huge problem in American culture, and one that doesn't get near enough attention. The movie we will be watching later in the course Divided We Fall, explores this topic in greater detail and is very powerful and moving.

  2. It makes me so sad to hear about things like this as well. I have many friends that are Muslim and Sikh and it's crazy how much hatred gets turned towards them because of the color of their skin and their religion.

  3. The only thing I can think to say is that people need to stop being so apathetic and we need to start helping those who are being targeted and oppressed right now. People need to wake up and grow up. It's like the most privileged are bullies. It's frustrating.
